Dr. Evan Rieder
New York
Dermatology
Dr. Evan Rieder is one of only a few physicians in the United States to be dual board-certified in both dermatology and psychiatry. With more than a decade of experience, this unique background gives him a deep understanding of how skin conditions and aesthetics affect patients’ overall wellness.
He brings a compassionate, curious perspective to every interaction, working with each person to find practical solutions that meet their individual skin goals. Dr. Rieder has clinical expertise in medical dermatology, aesthetic dermatology, and skin care.
Dr. Rieder began his academic career studying religion and music at Dartmouth College. After graduation, he taught English in Nepal and the experience showed him how much he wanted to help fellow human beings. He returned to take additional science courses at Bryn Mawr College and then earned his medical degree from University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.
There, Dr. Rieder was drawn to both psychiatry and dermatology. As he started to learn about dermatology, he saw that patients were often anxious about their skin, and he realized he could combine his passions by working at the intersection of the skin and the brain.
“For anyone who’s ever lived with an inflammatory skin condition—and we’ve all had acne at some point in our lives—it really affects the way we interact with the outside world, the way we view ourselves, and whether we like it or not, the way the rest of the world interacts with us,” Dr. Rieder says. “I want to help people look and feel their best.”
To do this, he completed two residencies—one in psychiatry and the other in dermatology—at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
After finishing his training, Dr. Rieder served as a full time faculty member at NYU where he was an attending dermatologist at NYU and New York Health and Hospitals-Bellevue as well as an attending psychiatrist at Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System. He has taught medical students and residents in dermatology, conducted extensive research on cosmetic dermatology, and continues to treat complex cases that involve interactions between psychological conditions and the skin.
Dr. Rieder is now a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and opened his own practice, 36 North Dermatology, in Tribeca in 2024. He takes a psychologically informed approach to dermatology, often asking questions about mood and body image that traditional dermatologists might not and incorporating psychological modalities and tapping his network of trusted colleagues in the mental health space when appropriate.
Dr. Rieder is also known for using cutting-edge technology as part of his tailored plans. In creating his own practice, he knew he wanted patients to have access to the best evidence-based tools, the most up-to-date treatments, and the optimal environment.
When patients enter Dr. Rieder’s office, they are met with a sense of comfort and ease. Dr. Rieder used the principles of neuroaesthetics to design a warm, welcoming, intellectually stimulating space that maximizes patient wellness. “Everything from the color palette to the lighting to the textures to having fine art in the clinical space is going to stimulate the brain in ways that will have profound effects on the way we perceive information,” Dr. Rieder says.
He also prizes the collaborative model of Atria, and believes this is the ideal way to take care of patients. “You’re getting access to the best minds in medicine and you’re getting that all in a space that is most comfortable for you—that’s the experience I want to offer,” he says.
Outside of work, Dr. Rieder enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, exercising, and traveling, especially to places where he can be immersed in nature.
