Gynecology

For Dr. Jane Owen, the most effective care has always come from looking at the whole person—a philosophy shaped long before she became a physician. As Director of Women’s Health at Atria New York, Dr. Owen brings nearly three decades of experience in obstetrics and gynecology, physical therapy, and academic medicine to a practice built on connecting the dots between a patient’s history, their body, and their goals.

Dr. Owen grew up in Virginia, the daughter of a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Watching her father attend physical therapy for the lasting effects of his service sparked her earliest interest in health care. After earning her bachelor’s in biology at James Madison University, she went on to study physical therapy at Columbia University, and in the years that followed she worked across orthopedic and pediatric practices, treated patients at a nursing home and a government rehabilitation facility in Washington, D.C., and joined humanitarian medical missions in Croatia, Romania, and Kenya, including caring for young soldiers during the war in Croatia.

Though she valued physical therapy’s whole-body approach, Dr. Owen wanted to explore other ways to help her patients. She enrolled at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine intending to become a rehabilitation physician, drawn to the idea of working with spinal cord injuries and adaptive equipment. During her training, however, she discovered a passion for surgery and for women’s health. “Obstetrics and gynecology really found me,” she says. “It was a lot of trial and error, and I had to find my own path. But I’m so thankful for it. I have a different perspective on medicine, and I think every piece of my experience helps me treat my patients.”

Dr. Owen completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Brooklyn Hospital Center. After starting at a multispecialty practice in Brooklyn, she spent 12 years as Director of the Women's Center at Montefiore Medical Center’s Bronx East location, where she also held a faculty appointment at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In that role, she trained residents and cared for a population with limited access to private obstetric care, an experience she credits with reinforcing the mission-driven nature of women's health.

In 2018, Dr. Owen joined Mount Sinai Faculty Practice Associates as an attending obstetrician-gynecologist at the Rowan Women’s Health Center on the Upper East Side, where she also became an assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Across her career, Dr. Owen has built a reputation for translating complex information into clear, reassuring guidance. She often walks her patients through the biology behind a diagnosis, explaining her findings so they can understand the difference between common, treatable issues and what warrants more intervention.

Dr. Owen knows that health information on social media can be confusing and she encourages patients to bring any questions they have so they can talk them through together. “There’s often just enough information out there to make people scared, but that can create a way for us to get into what’s really going on,” she says. “I want to give patients the best information and resources I can, and if I don't have the answer, I’ll find the right information or specialist for them.”

Dr. Owen has spent much of her career shepherding patients through pregnancies, delivering countless babies, and treating the full spectrum of women’s health. At Atria, she provides all manner of gynecologic care and particularly enjoys focusing on aspects that often fall through the cracks in the traditional health care system: preconception planning, fertility optimization, and postpartum recovery.

She draws on her vast experience to support patients throughout their lifecycle, whether that’s dealing with menstrual irregularities, preparing for pregnancy, discussing fertility options such as egg freezing, or closing the gap many women experience after delivery, when questions about pelvic floor recovery, surgical healing, and their changing bodies arise. For those who become pregnant, she can also collaborate with their obstetrician and offer what she calls a “second ear” throughout the process.

No matter the stage of life her patients are in, Dr. Owen creates a calm, warm environment where they feel comfortable sharing their goals and priorities. She builds deep trust with her patients and works to empower each person to get to know their own body and take ownership over their health.

“We are so fortunate to be women,” she says. “I love helping people realize that their body is strong enough to recover and take care of itself.”

Dr. Owen is excited about advances in women’s health, from new fertility options to increasing attention on pelvic floor therapy to menopause treatment and modern hormone therapy. “I work with patients to optimize their health and function,” she says, “so they can live their healthiest life.”

When she’s not treating patients, Dr. Owen loves spending time with her two children, both of whom live nearby in New York. A former marathoner, she now often spends her free time in the park and enjoys learning about new science and research in women’s health.
