Emergency Medicine

Dr. John Kim has practiced emergency medicine in places many physicians never see: at the Olympics in London and South Korea, on corporate trips across six continents, in hotel rooms from Morocco to Thailand, and—most importantly—in the homes of families who need hospital-level care without the hospital. A board-certified emergency medicine doctor with more than 20 years of experience, he has developed a unique ability to provide creative, comprehensive medical care wherever patients find themselves.

Dr. Kim’s approach to medicine is deeply personal, shaped by watching his mother work as a nurse throughout his childhood. He saw firsthand how connection, kindness, and patience can make a profound difference in patients’ lives. That early exposure taught him an essential lesson that guides his work today: there are interventions that treat illness, but there’s also a human side of medicine that’s just as important.

Dr. Kim is known for his ability to creatively problem-solve in challenging circumstances. Over two decades, he has provided medical care in dozens of countries and settings, from multiple Olympic games to corporate board meetings in remote locations. He has learned to treat everything from routine illness to injuries that might otherwise leave someone in a hospital waiting room, providing the highest standard of medical care and ensuring patients feel safe wherever they are.

Dr. Kim studied biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before earning his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also provided medical coverage for professional sporting events and regional festivals.

After residency, Dr. Kim worked as an emergency physician at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Southside and later at Englewood Hospital Medical Center in New Jersey. But as he saw the constraints of the traditional health care system, he was drawn to a different path—one that would allow him to combine his love of travel, diverse cultures, and personalized medicine.

In 2008, Dr. Kim joined Inhouse Physicians, eventually becoming National Program Director. In this role, he traveled extensively, working with top executives from industries ranging from finance to pharmaceuticals to automotives, spending weeks at a time with companies’ leaders and highest performers.

These experiences have made Dr. Kim exceptionally resourceful and adaptable. “When you treat people in their own environment, they’re more comfortable and more likely to be themselves,” Dr. Kim says. “People open up more readily and we can build a trust that helps me treat them.” Seeing details about patients’ surroundings can provide crucial context for their health that helps him understand each person or family and tailor care to their individual needs.

In 2019, Dr. Kim joined Sollis Health, where he served as Medical Director for At-Home Care and as an emergency medicine physician. He trained more than 100 doctors, nurses, and other providers across Sollis locations in New York and California, developed triage guidelines used across all departments, and created protocols that improved efficiency and patient care. Dr. Kim has also continued to provide travel medical services through his own company, TrekMD.

At Atria, Dr. Kim appreciates the opportunity to develop ongoing relationships with families and work alongside top specialists across disciplines. “It’s important to surround yourself with diverse and talented people you can learn from,” Dr. Kim says. “Being part of a team where everyone brings expertise at the highest level allows us to give patients truly collaborative, comprehensive care.”

In 2022, Dr. Kim’s wife and son launched Culture Kids Productions, a podcast that grew out of the family’s travels during his assignments and has since won recognition from the Webby Awards, the Ambies, Common Sense Media, Signal, and the Communicator Awards. He advises and sometimes appears on the show, which teaches children about cultures, traditions, and geography from around the world.

Dr. Kim lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their two children. Outside of medicine, he stays active and enjoys exploring new places with his family, always looking for opportunities to learn about different cultures and ways of life.
