Dr. Lawrence C. Newman
New York
Neurology
In addition to being the Director of the Atria Brain Health Program, Dr. Lawrence Newman is a Professor of Neurology at the New York University Langone School of Medicine. Prior to joining Atria, he served as the Director of the Division of Headache at NYU Langone Medical Center.
Dr. Newman is the Immediate Past Chair of the American Migraine Foundation, former President of the American Headache Society (AHS), currently serves on the Board of Directors of AHS, and previously served on the Board of Directors of the Headache Cooperative of New England. He is a Fellow of the American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology.
Before joining NYU, Dr. Newman founded the Headache Institute at Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director from 1998 to 2016. Earlier, Dr. Newman was a Resident and Chief Resident in Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his headache fellowship and was an attending physician at the Montefiore Headache Unit until 1997.
Motivated by his own experiences with chronic migraines, Dr. Newman became one of the first clinically trained specialists in headache medicine in the United States when he completed specialized fellowship training in 1989.
When asked why he joined Atria, Dr. Newman says, “The people here have all come together from different angles, but for the same purpose. We ask ourselves, ‘How are we going to change medicine? How are we going to improve people's lives? How are we going to do things that nobody has done before?’ We're creating the playbook.”
