Cardiology

Dr. Natalie Bello is a leading cardiologist, innovator, and physician-scientist with special expertise in hypertension and cardiovascular risk around pregnancy. Board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and echocardiography, she integrates cutting-edge research and technology to provide tailored, evidence-based care to her patients.

An early lover of science, Dr. Bello saw medicine as a way to combine her passion for learning with her desire to help others. She likens being a physician to detective work, collaborating with patients to ask the right questions, address their needs, and create personalized plans for long-term health. “I always tell my patients my goal is to make it so that you hopefully never need to see me in an acute setting. Let’s extend your healthspan and work together to make you the healthiest possible person,” Dr. Bello says.

After growing up in New Jersey, Dr. Bello earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Cornell University and received her medical degree from University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She then completed her residency in internal medicine at Columbia University and served for a year as Chief Resident.

Dr. Bello pursued a cardiology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, driven partly by the loss of both her grandfathers to cardiovascular events during her childhood. During her fellowship, a close friend experienced a complicated pregnancy due to preeclampsia, and this prompted Dr. Bello to learn more about the impact of pregnancy complications on women’s cardiovascular health. During two additional years in Boston, Dr. Bello completed a post-doctoral research fellowship diving into how female-specific factors can impact risk of heart disease. She also earned her Master in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health.

After completing her training, Dr. Bello moved to Columbia University, where she spent seven years teaching, treating patients, and conducting research. She went on to become the Director of Research for the Columbia Women’s Heart Center. In 2021, and was recruited to be Director of Hypertension Research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Bello’s research examines how hypertensive disorders of pregnancy contribute to elevated cardiovascular disease risk. As chair of the American College of Cardiology’s Reproductive Health and Cardio-Obstetrics Section, she has been a leader in advancing research and awareness of cardiovascular health during the perinatal period.

By incorporating the latest research and techniques into her practice, Dr. Bello identifies risk factors early on and works with each patient to address their individual concerns and health goals.

“The important message that I always tell my patients is this is not your destiny. Getting your history, putting it together with the rest of your family history, your current profile of inflammatory markers, and everything else can help us change your trajectory,” Dr. Bello says.

The collaborative environment and emphasis on precision medicine at Atria align with her patient-centered approach to care. “I’m always interested in what’s new, what’s next, what’s proven. I am an early adopter, but I think it’s important to have balance and make sure the science is rigorous,” Dr. Bello says. “I practice thinking about how I would want to be treated, how I would want a family member to be treated. And part of that is wanting the best that’s out there.”

When she is not treating patients, Dr. Bello enjoys playing tennis and exercising her green thumb to take care of the many plants she keeps thriving in her Manhattan home.
