Dr. Scott Bomann
New York
Emergency Medicine
Dr. Scott Bomann knew he wanted to pursue medicine from the time he was a young child. Some of his earliest memories revolve around watching his grandparents, both physicians, treat patients from their home office. Yet it wasn’t until near the end of his medical training, when he completed an emergency medicine rotation at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, that Dr. Bomann found his medical home. “This is what I should be doing,” he remembers thinking.
“I love the pace of emergency medicine. I love the fact that it’s a little bit surgical, and it’s a little bit medical. I love that we get the first crack at the diagnosis, so there’s detective work,” Dr. Bomann says. “I like to be a friendly face to people who believe they’re having the worst day of their life and I can be there for them.”
After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Occidental College and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Bomann completed his emergency medicine residency at Weill Cornell College of Medicine and became Chief Resident.
He stayed at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx for several years, working his way up to Assistant Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine there. In 2007, Dr. Bomann moved to New Zealand for a year to provide emergency care in the rural farming community of Timaru, which has limited medical resources. During his year in New Zealand, Dr. Bomann and his family fell in love with the country and knew they would want to return.
Dr. Bomann saw the need to incorporate the latest technology and imaging into emergency medicine, so he pursued an emergency ultrasound fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. He worked as an Attending Physician in Yale’s Department of Emergency Medicine until he found a way back to New Zealand, this time working as an Emergency Medicine Specialist and Director of Emergency Ultrasound at Wellington Hospital in the country’s capital.
Dr. Bomann spent more than a decade in Wellington, working in his hospital’s emergency department and creating and implementing the first ultrasound education curriculum for emergency medicine trainees in New Zealand and Australia. He served as the chair of the Ultrasound Committee for the Australian College for Emergency Medicine and taught many students and younger doctors throughout his time there.
“Teaching forces you to be on top of things. It’s a great luxury as a physician to have people junior to me asking questions and pushing me constantly,” Dr. Bomann says.
Due to his work in different environments around the world, Dr. Bomann has treated patients from a wide variety of backgrounds. While there are always new cultural nuances or medical circumstances to learn, he emphasizes that the care and understanding people need stays the same.
“One thing I’ve become very aware of in emergency medicine is how bias can affect all of us,” he says. Rather than making assumptions based on previous patient experiences, Dr. Bomann approaches each encounter with an open mind. “The first thing I do is wipe any bias out of my mind, sit down, and just listen and feel the situation out,” he says. “I try to be empathetic to people who are experiencing something hard.”
Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Boman wanted to experience working outside a large hospital system. He appreciates the opportunity to interact directly with patients at Atria and enjoys focusing on helping them and their families navigate moments when they need urgent medical assistance.
Dr. Bomann lives in New York with his wife, and when he is not practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time with his three adult children, playing guitar, writing music, running, and gardening.
