Dr. Edward Greaney fell in love with New York City during his time at NYU School of Medicine. He describes his residency in internal medicine at NYU Medical Center / Bellevue Hospital as, “a magical blend of intensity, autonomy, dedication and humility.” He was selected to do an additional year as one of the Chief Medical Residents in his program. After completing his formal training, Dr. Greaney joined a private practice and remained on the faculty of NYU School of Medicine. Prior to joining Atria, Dr. Greaney maintained a thriving medical practice for over 20 years. In addition, he served as the Associate Team Physician of the New York Mets for several years. He also received countless accolades including Castle Connolly Top Doctors, New York Magazine’s Best Doctors, Super Doctors, and Compassionate Doctors awards.
Over the years, Dr. Greaney became increasingly frustrated with the hurdles to practicing proactive medical care. The hurdles in getting an appropriate coronary score, a chest CT scan, a brain MRI, or genetic testing for his patients made it virtually impossible for him to provide effective primary care. A desire to be at the forefront of primary care, diagnosis, and prevention prompted Dr. Greaney to look for a change.
In 2021, Dr. Greaney was introduced to the founders of Atria by a colleague who identified their obvious shared interest. Over the last year, Dr. Greaney has helped assemble an ambitious team of clinicians dedicated to proactive, preventive medicine. “I am beyond excited to work closely with an amazing group of colleagues to revolutionize medicine and define the future of preventive healthcare,” says Dr. Greaney.
Like many doctors, Dr. Greaney’s journey to medicine started early. After his mother experienced life-threatening complications from an elective hysterectomy, she decided to pursue a career in nursing. Suddenly, Dr. Greaney’s kindergarten coloring books became an anatomical atlas, and a passion was born. Throughout high school, he worked as a veterinary technician at an animal hospital, where he enjoyed his first taste of clinical medicine and the immense personal rewards to guiding individuals and families through often frightening and challenging medical experiences. After endless consultations with his mentor, Dr. Greaney decided to become a medical doctor who has dogs—instead of a veterinarian who has kids. Dr. Greaney graduated from Binghamton University with Academic Honors. He has three beautiful children—all of whom believe they are his favorite.
